JFK STUDENTS ARE INDUCTED INTO WORLD LANGUAGES HONOR SOCIETIES
On Tuesday, October 18, the JFK World Language Department inducted its newest members into the Spanish, French, Italian, and Chinese Honor Societies. These students were honored for their excellence in their studies of a world language in a ceremony that included student poetry, speeches, and a video montage featuring departmental highlights. Special thanks go to Ms. Francesca Engelson for organizing this event, Gabriela Tejada for serving as the Master of Ceremony, and to Sophie Clancy, Eliana Conrad, Sara Maltempi, and Jocelyn Yeung for their poetry reading and for leading the oath for each of the languages. Congratulations to all the inductees!

History:
La sociedad honoraria hispánica: Rosalía de Castro
La sociedad honoraria hispánica was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1953 for the students of Spanish in North American secondary schools. The Kennedy chapter is moderated by Ms. Engelson.
La società onoraria italica: Giovanni Verga Chapter
La società onoraria italica was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Italian in the early 1950's for the students of Italian in North American secondary schools. The Kennedy Chapter is moderated by Ms. Alfieri.
La société honoraire de français: François Villon Dillon Chapter
The société honoraire de français was founded by the American Association of Teachers of French in the early 1950's for the students of French in North American secondary schools. The Kennedy Chapter is moderated by Mr. Cirino.
全美中文荣誉学会 (National Chinese Honor Society): Laozi Chapter
The National Chinese Honor Society was established in November 1993. Its objective is to acknowledge the achievement of secondary students studying Chinese as a second language. The Kennedy Chapter is moderated by Ms. Hu
Requirements & Eligibility beginning in 2020:
The World Languages honor societies recognize students that demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the study of a World Language and show a genuine interest in the culture and people of the target language. The induction will take place in the fall. Please see the language-specific requirements below. It is expected that inductees will continue their World Language studies through the school year.
French candidates must:
- be enrolled in a French course at the time of induction.
- be an 11th or 12th-grade student who has completed a level 2 or Progressive course.
- have maintained a cumulative French average of 90 over three consecutive semesters prior to induction.
- have maintained an overall average of 80% or above.
- be enrolled in an Italian class at the time of induction.
- be an 11th or 12th-grade student who has completed a level 2 or Progressive course.
- have maintained a cumulative Italian average of 90 over three consecutive semesters prior to induction.
- have maintained an overall average of 80% or above.
- be enrolled in a Mandarin class at the time of induction.
- be an 11th or 12th-grade student who has completed a level 2 course.
- have maintained a cumulative Mandarin average of 85 over three consecutive semesters prior to induction.
- have maintained an overall average of 80% or above.
- be enrolled in a Spanish class at the time of induction.
- be an 11th or 12th-grade student who has completed a level 2 course.
- have maintained a cumulative Spanish average of 90 over three consecutive semesters prior to induction.
- have maintained an overall average of 80% or above.
